Turn Up Your Thermostat

Chapter two begins the idea of self image and how you reflect upon yourself. I enjoyed this chapter and it taught me a couple concepts. Ben Newman had a rough childhood when his mother passed away. From that moment until college he did not have a good self image of himself. After he graduated college at Michigan State University he came up with the thirty second self image. He would take thirty seconds everyday and visualize who he wanted to be and how he wanted his life to turn around. When I look at my life and my goals I want my outcome in life to reflect of my own goals. I have a vision of how I want my life to happen, I want to graduate college with a good gpa, win some NCAA titles, have a wife and kids that I love, and be great wrestling coach. Right now my self image is not what I want it to be. I have struggled in school, and I’m not where I want to be in wrestling. Newman says “If you tell yourself I can’t do this work, then its unlikely that your self image will include a vision of your self as the big boss”. I do not want to hold onto the negatives and will strive for the greater things in life as well as a better self image of my self.

Image- An image is an artifact that depicts visual perception, such as a photograph or other two dimensional picture, that resembles a subject usually a physical object and thus provides a depiction of it.

Vision- The faculty or state of being able to see, the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom.

Performance- An act of staging or presenting a play, concert, or other form of entertainment. The action or process of carrying out or accomplishing an action, task, or function.

Visualization- The representation of an object, situation, or set of information as a chart or other image.

Communication- The imparting or exchanging of information or news, means of sending or receiving information such as telephone lines or computers.

At the end of the chapter it asks to take some time and reflect on how your mental video would be like and how you want to live the rest of your life. Like the first part says I will need to set a reminder to take thirty seconds and reflect on how I want to live my life from here on out. I want to live the rest of my life like it was already planned out from the start. I want to live a life where I know that I can still accomplish my goals and be happy with the way that I attainted them. I have been told to visualize before in wrestling as well as other things, so needless to say I know how to do it. I want to accomplish everything I visualize in the best way that I can. There will be struggle and road blocks on the way, but if I hold a positive vision of my self image then I will be likely to become that vision. file:///Users/alexlloyd/Downloads/ET%20Ch%202.pdf

Final blog number 3

I like to focus on winning just like Roger Federer. I have always focused on winning but not only in wrestling but a lot of other things. I have thought about winning in school and life. I like to think that I can win in a lot of things with school as long as put my mind to it. If you think that you can do it and believe it as well you can do just about anything. I also agree with how this article that if you think too far ahead you you may lose as well. In my wrestling my dad always told me take it one match at a time. I always though like that as well because anything can happen in one split second if you think too hard about something. It is also very true that if you stay focused hard enough you have a lot better chance of success. I have a really good work ethic like Roger Federer and if I start focusing really hard I can accomplish anything. There are always distractions that people have. I have plenty of distraction in my life that don’t help me but I work to get rid of those distractions. One of my biggest distractions is is my own laziness. I know Roger has plenty of distractions as well, but it is very true that focusing will make things a lot easier. I don’t know how he works through his distractions. School is very important and sometimes I get really distracted from it. I have had many problems with school and I still work to get better with getting my homework done on time, not missing class, doing good with with every assignment. Focusing on homework and school will make my goals in life easier. It will also allow me to keep wrestling and doing what I like to do best. Wrestling has been my favorite thing to do. I will always strive to be the best wrestler and will continue to focus on my goals and will be the best version of myself. I will get in a spot where things are going to hard, just got to stay focused and know what my goals are. Let see what happens and keep thriving to stay focused.

Define Your Win Blog 2

For this blog I will be doing a step by step process following the directions outlined in chapter one, Define Your Win. Step one I was asked to list my top three priorities. Of course I listed them and I will tell you guys what those are. Number one, I want to become a better student in life and school and I will explain the reasoning. Number two, to live up to my full potential in everything I do whether that is wrestling, student, friend, brother, son, etc… Number three, to live my life without regrets. I know that might be too vague of a statement but there is a lot of areas in my life where I would like to live without asking myself “why did I do that, what was going to help me with this outcome,” and I will go more in depth with this. I just completed the first part of the important priorities to me.

Next I was asked to tell someone I trust my PURPOSE in life, off the top of my head I started thinking and came up with one thing right away. It came quick to me because I had a wrestling coach telling me this every-time I saw him or every-time he gave a speech in front of everyone. What I’m thinking now is that my purpose may also be too vague. There is a lot of people that I trust and can tell them my purpose in life, I’m conflicted and want to tell more than just one person what I think my purpose is. But for now I will be going in depth with my three priorities in life and then figure out who to tell my purpose. There is a format to how I need to answer these questions and I will do it like the book says.

The first most important priority in my life is to be a better student, and this is why: I always slacked in high school and the beginning of my college career, and it was never easy to get out of the hole that I dug for myself in that situation. I have made many mistakes with school and I hate everyone that I did make. I was behind in class earlier this year and my coaches were not happy and to be honest neither was I. I told one of them “that it hurts to be behind” and to me it really does hurt. The second most important priority is to live up to my potential. This priority kind of goes with my purpose as well. I want to be the best I can be in anything and I will be willing to work for it as well. I’ve been to the top before and it was a great feeling. Now I want to be at the top again. My third most important priority is to live the rest of my life without regrets, or as few as possible. I don’t want to regret what happens from now on and just want to learn from is and improve on what I need to do. These are my three priorities in life and like the book says I will wake up every morning, look in the mirror and tell myself what my purpose and priorities are in life.

Knowing Greatness

Summary

Jason Belk knows how to figure greatness out. Jason wrote a book on it and how to make yourself better. He talks about greatness and how Define a win. Even though the first chapter is called “Define your Win” Jason talk’s about winning and the road that most people take to win. Maxine works her ass off every day to become a better version of herself everyday. Maxine had a life that was hard at first but she got to learn from her mother. Her mother built a workshop that most people already know of. Most people these days have heard of and know what and who build a bear workshop is. Little kids can come into the workshop and make a stuffed animal bear to make life easier. This chapter talks and defines a lot about priorities and purpose in life. There is a metaphor in this chapter and that metaphor is a scoreboard. This scoreboard is based on your conscious life and how you make decisions. Maxine had a purpose in her life, and that purpose was to live her life as her mothers daughter. The scoreboard can have a lot of impact on people and Maxine found out pretty early that no one can create your scoreboard and that you need to do everything by yourself. No one can live your life but you and you need to do what you have to live the best life you can.

Key terms/ main ideas

Purpose- The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

Winning- Gaining, resulting in, or relating to a victory in a contest or competition.

Priorities- The facts or condition of being regarded or treated as more important. A thing that is regarded as more important than another.

Purpose- The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. Have as one’s intention or objective.

Greatness- Greatness is a concept of a state of superiority affecting a person or object in a particular place or area. The quality of being great, distinguished, or eminent.

Analysis

Greatness can be found in many people in the world. But do they really want to seek it out? Maxine is one of few people that are willing to do a lot to proof themselves. Maxine took over a company that many people still go to today. People know what they want but people don’t want to work as hard to get where they want. It like what Mike Tyson said “Everyone wants to be big, but nobody want to life heavy ass weights”. People want to be great but they won’t put in the hard work to become great. Even though a lot of people don’t have the opportunity to become a CEO of a big company that many people today still use, there are still so many people out there that are working there ass off to become great. People are still going to go out their way to become great and they will do a lot to become great

The aspiring Goals of Lloyd

I have been awaken by a smart, intelligent man and he wants me to get back on the right track. So he told me he would like my to post my goals and in life and how I will be achieving them. I thought to myself at first this is actually a really good idea, it could work. So now I am sitting in my room lonely as hell trying to figure my life out with my goals.

I know I am a good student I just hate school in general. So One of my goals is to become a better student. I want to become the best version of myself. I want to get back in shape and wrestle like a god damn tank again. So goal number two is become the best wrestler I can. My father made me into a beast by taking me everywhere to wrestle, and I pretty much just went agains’t what I used to do and got fat. So goal number three would to become the best brother and son that I can. These are my three goals and I will be working to better myself as a student, wrestler, and family man.

  1. To become the best version of myself as a student will be tricky but I know I can do it. I will look on d2l everyday to see if I have anything due in class. I will throughly read all my reading and turn them in on time, no more missing homework because honestly it sucks and it hurt. Finally I will read other classmates post, comment on them and try to see how I can make my post better. This is what I will commit to and do it well. I will also be getting up at 8 every morning and get my day started with coffee.
  2. To become the best wrestler will be a journey I am capable of doing again. It will be tough but if I want to be at the top of the podium next year and at the NCAA’s I will have to work a lot harder. First I will start by getting in shape by running everyday now for at least 30 minutes. Then I will give 100% effort in the wrestling room, even if I have to go back on the bike and sprint tell I get to 100 rpm. I will always give 100% in life and hopefully not hurt any of my teammates. Finally I will do 100 push ups and sit ups everyday to get rid of my dad bod. It will hurt but I know I can do it.
  3. To become the best family man will be fun in my opinion, I wont have to argue with anyone and just be happy with the fam everyday. First I will call both my parents and brothers everyday to catch up and see what is new. Then I will text them everyday and tell them that I love them. Finally I will make sure that my little brother gets his shit together just like me and remind him everyday that he can do it. Being in good hopes with family is always good and you will be loved like non other.

Things that will distract me from my goals are weekends with and drinking, I know I shouldn’t be doing it and will thrive to get better. The second distraction is eating past 8pm, I need to stop munching because thats what is making me fat. Final distraction is bad food in general, I need to stop putting these nasty things in my belly. I will work to not get distracted by these three things and work to better myself.

Seeing Ourselves Through Technology ch 2 reflection

So as I was reading this chapter I thought to myself, what would people do without filters. Nowadays you can go online and see your friends posting pictures, and most of the time there might be a filter or two in the photo its self . Technology has come a long way since the 1900s. I tend to think people look better without filters but who am I to make that decision for someone. People of younger generations are blooming online with filters everywhere to try to show people that they are “pretty” or “hot” when in fact it’s not really who they are. I liked the chapter overall and thought there was some good things in it. Filters are being used everyday millions of times, I would say a lot more people use filters on snapchat than anything. I have an android and the camera quality sucks so I usually do add in filters to make the picture better, but people still know who I am and my goals. Nothing that you post on the internet really disappears so people need to be careful on what they post because there will be someone who says something nasty on a picture. Where as my coach Mr. Rutt he should probably add in some filters as he kind of looks like thumb thumb from spy kids. Im not saying adding filters is a bad thing, but I do think that we as the younger generation use filters a little too much and should just be happy with how they look. Just like the little class assignment we had to do, take a picture of something and add a filter to make it look more beautiful. What if it already is a beautiful piece of work. Peace out reflection blog, its been real with this chapter.

Seeing Ourselves Through Technology Ch3 Reflection

So I have been asked to make a reflection on what I have read earlier. Personally I didn’t like this article like the others but I read it anyway. There was a lot of good things in the article though I will agree to that. I actually liked how everyone had there own little way of doing something with filters and photos like the time lapse photos of themselves for many years and days straight. What I did not like is what people said online about their videos after words. saying sexual things and making homophobic comments. It just proves what I had in my head and talked about in some if the other posts I have made. People are not to be trusted online and this chapter kind of proves it with the comments that can be made online from other people. Nothing on the internet can disappear after you post it so people all over can still see it. The internet can not be trusted. But the the the internet is also one of the best things that we as humans have ever came up with, other than wifi. Without the internet and posting things on social media we would not be able to express ourselves and show people what we are doing.

Seeing Ourselves Through Technology Ch3 notes

Summary

It is a Monday morning and I am reading chapter 3 of Seeing Ourselves through technology by Jill Walker Rettberg. So this chapter is called Serial Selfies so I start thinking that this chapter is going to be about selfies. This chapter is not only about selfies but the background of what happened years before this age where selfies were not the same. what consisted of selfies back then is not the same as it is now, we are in a new era where we can take things like time lapse selfies, status updates, tweets, instagram posts. Self-representation is a big part in this chapter. Jill Walker Rettberg states “Digital self-representation and self-reflection is cumulative rather than presented as a definitive whole” (35). We use different social media sites to express how we look or represent each other but the way we reflect on those pictures could be totally different. We use our technology to make ourselves look better. We take a photo look at it and try to fix something about us to seem different like fixing your hair or posing in a different position. Whereas back when everyone took pictures with photo booths we couldn’t pause to do some of these things.

Key words/ Terms

Genre- A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.

Selfies- A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.

Serial- Consisting of, forming part of, or taking place in a series.

Reflection- The throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it. Or a serious thought or consideration.

Expression- The process of making known one’s thoughts or feelings. A look on someone’s face that conveys a particular emotion.

Visual- Relating too seeing or sight. A picture, piece of film, or display used to illustrate or accompany something.

Analysis

I don’t really have a side in this argument, because I think that both sides have good points. technology is more modern everyday, look at apple for example and how they always come up with something new with something being better than the previous product like phones. With things such as time lapse photos and posting them on youtube as Ahree Lee and Noah Kalina did. We can see how posting things like this on youtube or other social media sites can also be bad. People were saying and commenting mean things. Jill says “There are slurs against asians and women (‘now do it again with your tits’)”(37). There will always be people that say bad things to try and hurt someones feelings so always posting things on social media sites could also be bad for some people. Posting things online is also a good way to spread new trends such as the time lapse selfie. Rettberg states “After Lee’s and Kalina’s videos went viral, hundreds if not thousands of similar videos had been posted online, and many of these have become very popular too”(38). So all together I don’t have a side since social media is a good thing and also could be a bad things for people and their selfies.

Seeing ourselves through technology Ch 1 Notes

Summary- We rely on technology these days and we also have a lot of opinions how we do things on said technology. One of them is seeing ourselves and self image. This article talks a lot about self representation and how we view our selves and others on social media cites. We see ourselves in many different ways and social media has a lot to do with it. We want to be seen as funny or beautiful so we express ourselves on social media cites to feel better about it. Drawing is a good way to express feeling as well. Only 20-30% of the population was literate in the seventeenth century, so people began drawing to show their thoughts. The way people text shows how they are. If you are friendly you probably text with more energy. Self representation can be expressed in many different ways.

Key terms/ key words

Abstract- Existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence.

Filter- A porous device for removing impurities or solid particles from a liquid or a gas passed through it.

Representation- The action of speaking or acting on behalf of someone or the state of being represented.

Quantitative- Relating to, measuring, or measured by the quantity of something rather than its quality.

Self- A person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others, especially considered as the object of introspection or reflexive action.

Analysis

I think judgement is bad but it is hard to say nothing when you see a model posted a picture on instagram. I think people can post whatever they want on any social media site, but they should be watching the comments that they are making. Someone can really get hurt when they read the comments someone makes on a picture. Why when someone posts something people always want to jump on and start saying mean things. I think they should make social media a safer place for people posting. They need to make comments to be nicer for the actual person that posts something. A app that can see what people post and get rid of mean comments so someone doesn’t get hurt.

Imagining The Blogosphere Reflection

So it’s a Sunday afternoon and I am doing this reflection. I thought that the article was pretty cool actually because of the way people use blogging to communicate. Communication is a way of life and people are doing that in new fashion. Using the internet is a new way of communication and people are reading articles at the same time. The way people talk back and forth to each other on blogs is good for blogging. I also believe that is a new era of communication and there will be more of this to come in the next ten years. Younger kids are going to blog more and start typing away back and forth to random people. The internet doesn’t have many rules and anything can happen on it. Thats why I think that it may also be bad for younger kids to start blogging and replying to people, some people will use this for their own good and rip some people to shreds. Language and bullying are going to be game changers for younger people and some of them might not be able to control themselves on the internet.
